Please introduce yourself

My name is Betty Steel and I'm a member of the Education & Government Affairs team and Chair of the ACCESSability ERG.

What is the mission of the ACCESSability ERG?

The ACCESSability ERG is committed to building an inclusive community where people of all abilities are welcome. We strive to raise awareness of issues related to ability, to increase access to resources and opportunities for individuals across the organization who are experiencing barriers and to advocate for experiences that empower all people to participate with joy and confidence, in the fullness of their identity.

How are you working toward that mission?

We’re building a safe, respectful and inclusive community where folks can be honest about their experiences. We’re taking both our joys and challenges and transforming them into resources and experiences that can reach even more people across the organization so they know they’re not alone.

Are there opportunities for allies to get involved with the group? What does that entail?

Yes! Allies are welcome in our community and at our ERG meetings. In fact, we have a firm non-disclosure agreement, which means that no one is under any obligation to label or discuss their ability status, ever. All we ask is that everyone who participates remains kind, respectful and willing to listen and learn.

Is there anything else you want employees to know about the ACCESSability ERG?

We know it can be hard embracing an aspect of your identity related to ability, let alone sharing that identity with others. We just want everyone to know that wherever you are on your ability journey, this community is a safe and gentle place to find community, support, and resources. You are not alone!
